Luke 17:20-29 — Kingdom vs Judgement

R EAD THIS:  Luke 17:20-29 20 Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”  22 Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. 23 People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. 24 For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.  26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.  28 “...

Luke 17:11-19 — 10 "healed" guys...1 HEALED guy?

R EAD THIS:  Luke 17:11-19 11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” 14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. 15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? In this passage, it can be easy to see the miracle that happens here and miss out on the important details around it, so let's take a closer look! Verse 11 tells us Jesus is traveling along the border of Sa...

Luke 17:7-10 — “YOU WON!”

R EAD THIS:  Luke 17:7-10 7 “Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? 8 Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? 9 Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? 10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’” WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? Have you ever thought about what it’s going to be like when you see God in heaven for the first time? In this story, Jesus calls out the people who were thinking to themselves that when they got to heaven, God would say “You’re the best servant ever! You won! You just got promoted!” Jesus uses the example of a servant coming home after a long day to describe our own lives here on earth! When a servant comes home to their master,...

Luke 17:3b-6 — You got the faith to forgive?

R EAD THIS:  Luke 17:3b-6 3b “If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. 4 Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”  5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”  6 He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you. WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? Yesterday, we learned about how big of a no-no it is to lead someone the wrong way. Right after saying that, Jesus says we need to make sure we call people out who sin against us. SO, when someone tries to lead us the wrong way, we can't just think "oop, they're screwing up, I'm gonna just side shuffle away and therefore not be led astray." Instead, when see someone trying to lead us astray, we call them out.  That same concept applies to any sin someone commits against us, whether...

Luke 17:1-3a — You trippin'?

R EAD THIS:  Luke 17:1-3a 1 Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. 2 It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. 3 So watch yourselves. WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? In short, Jesus is saying that everyone messes up. But, even worse than messing up is causing OTHER people to mess up. We need to watch ourselves, not just so that we don't mess up, but so that we don't cause someone else to mess up. Jesus takes leadership very seriously, and He holds leaders to a higher standard. We need to watch ourselves and see where we are intentionally or unintentionally leading people the wrong way. How we act doesn't just affect us but everyone around us, especially those who look to us as leaders.  THINK ABOUT IT: 1. Where in your life are you a leader? Think about places both that you're required...

Luke 16:19-31 — One BIG Difference

R EAD THIS:  Luke 16:19-31 19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ 25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to...

Luke 16:16-18 — The Word = TRUTH

R EAD THIS:  Luke 16:16-18 16 “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it. 17 It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.   18 “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? These verses are all about God’s Word! For us, when we think of the Word of God, we think of the Bible, but during the time of Jesus’s life, God’s Word was just the Old Testament (often called “the Law and the Prophets”). Jesus is trying to make a couple big points here about the Word, so let’s break it down. The first thing Jesus wants to make clear is that God’s Word has been preached!  Jesus says that even until the time of John the Baptist, God’s Word has been proclaimed. Think about the Old Testament…...

Luke 16:13-15 — Only 1!

R EAD THIS:  Luke 16:13-15 13 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”  14 The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. 15 He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight. WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? If you remember from yesterday's blog post, Jesus's words here come right after a parable about worldly riches. Jesus is trying to make one thing clear to the Pharisees in particular, but also to us: you can only serve one master in this life... so who will it be? As verse 14 tells us, many of the Pharisees loved money and loved God, but here we see Jesus telling that between God and money, they can only choose to serve one of those "masters." While money may not be the thing that we are tempted...

Luke 16:1-12 — Honest or Dishonest?

R EAD THIS:  Luke 16:1-12 1 Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. 2 So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’ 3 “The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— 4 I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’ 5 “So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 “‘Nine hundred gallons of olive oil,’ he replied. “The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred and fifty.’ 7 “Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’“‘A thousand bushels of wheat,’ he replied. “He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’   8 “The master commended the dishonest manager because...

Luke 15:11-32 — “Lost” Parable #3!

R EAD THIS:  Luke 15:11-32 11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. 13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of yo...

Luke 15:8-10 — “Lost” Parable #2!

R EAD THIS:  Luke 15:8-10 8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? This is the second of three parables in Luke 15. All of these parables share the same idea: something being lost and suddenly being found! When you read these, remember that each of these parables are a part of Jesus’s response to a question from the Pharisees about why Jesus welcomes sinners and spends time with them. In this parable, Jesus tells the story of a woman who only has 10 coins, and suddenly loses a 10th of her wealth in an instant! So, she searches her house all over until it is found, and then she calls all the people she cares about to...

Luke 15:1-7 — “Lost” Parable #1!

R EAD THIS:  Luke 15:1-7 1 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” 3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? Over the next three days, we are going to be covering Luke 15. This chapter consists of three parables, all about the same idea: something being lost and suddenly being found! When you read these, rem...

Luke 14:25-35 — Spiritual Budgeting

R EAD THIS:  Luke 14:25-35 25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ 31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In t...

Luke 14:15-24 — God’s Dinner Party!

R EAD THIS:  Luke 14:15-24 15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”  16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ 18 “But they all alike began to make excuses.  The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ 19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’ 20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’  21 “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’  22 “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘...

Luke 14:7-14 — The Cool Kid Table

R EAD THIS:  Luke 14:7-14 7 When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: 8 “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”  12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when...

Luke 14:1-6 — Rule Follower or God Follower?

R EAD THIS:  Luke 14:1-6 1  One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. 2 There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. 3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” 4 But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way. 5 Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?” 6 And they had nothing to say. WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? A few days ago, we did a devo all about how the Pharisees were often so caught up in the rules of God that they missed the real point behind the rules, and this passage shows us that same point! The Pharisees had invited Jesus over for a meal, which sounds nice at first… until you see that the whole point of having Him over was to see if they could catch Him saying something that...

Luke 13:31-35 — For or Against?

R EAD THIS:  Luke 13:31-35 31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.”  32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’ 33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!  34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’” WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? In this passage, we can see Jesus beginning to grow more and more bold as He speaks to people like the Pharisees. Jesus courageously speaks against King Herod when He i...

Luke 13:22-30 — Knock knock...

R EAD THIS:  Luke 13:22-30 22 Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” He said to them, 24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’ “But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ 26 “Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 “But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’  28 “There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. 29 People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast...

Luke 13:18-21 — It's that (y)eas(t)y!

R EAD THIS:  Luke 13:18-21 18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.” 20 Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.” WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? Do you know what a mustard seed and yeast have in common? They're both tiny little things that end up having a bigger result than you think is possible. A mustard seed is one of the smallest of seeds, and it grows into a shrub, but if it's taken care of well in the right conditions, that shrub resembles a big, sprawling tree! Yeast is tiny; you only need a little bit to put in your flour. Just a tiny bit of yeast makes an entire loaf of bread rise, even 60 pounds of it! For both the mustard seed and the yeast, though, th...

Luke 13:10-17 — Foul! Legalism!

R EAD THIS:  Luke 13:10-17 10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.  14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.” 15 The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”  17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the peo...

Luke 13:1-9 — Sin = Sin

R EAD THIS:  Luke 13:1-8 1  Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”  6 Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. 7 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’ 8 “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around i...

Luke 12:54-59 — Holy Weather Report

R EAD THIS:  Luke 12:54-59 54 He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does. 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time? 57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.” WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? Just a few days ago, we had some pretty bad rain down here in Houston... and you could tell it was coming the whole day... But how? All you had to do was look up! The sky was super dark, it started feeling colder and colder outside,...

Luke 12:49-53 — Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Division...?

R EAD THIS:  Luke 12:49-53 49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? This is one of those passages that makes a person stop and say, "Wait, I thought Jesus was the Prince of Peace?" Jesus is the Prince of Peace, but not everything about Jesus was fulfilled the first time He came. As we've been saying the past few days, Jesus will be coming again, and when He comes again is when everything about Jesus will come to be so. ...

Luke 12:41-48 — Into the Spider-verse

R EAD THIS:  Luke 12:41-48 41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?” 42 The Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.  47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. 48 But the one who does not know and does thin...

Luke 12:35-40 — Jesus is coming!!!

R EAD THIS:  Luke 12:35-40 35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak.  39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? In this parable, Jesus is trying to teach us about how we should be living until the day He comes back! In case you didn't know, Jesus ha...

Luke 12:22-34 — Don't Worry, Be Happy

R EAD THIS:  Luke 12:22-31 22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? 27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and yo...

Luke 12:13-21 — False Riches

R EAD THIS:  Luke 12:13-21 13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” 16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ 18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’   20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ 21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for thems...
