Luke 15:8-10 — “Lost” Parable #2!
READ THIS: Luke 15:8-10
8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
This is the second of three parables in Luke 15. All of these parables share the same idea: something being lost and suddenly being found! When you read these, remember that each of these parables are a part of Jesus’s response to a question from the Pharisees about why Jesus welcomes sinners and spends time with them. In this parable, Jesus tells the story of a woman who only has 10 coins, and suddenly loses a 10th of her wealth in an instant! So, she searches her house all over until it is found, and then she calls all the people she cares about to rejoice over the lost coin (super similar story to the lost sheep, right?).
The important takeaway we learn from this parable in particular is just how valuable we are to Jesus. In the same way that a woman who only owns 10 silver coins (which was not worth a whole lot back then) would desperately seek after a lost coin, we are loved by a God that desperately longs for us to be with Him. But here’s the thing.. Jesus sees your life as something infinitely more valuable than money. We know this because He gave up something that was priceless to save you: His own life. If we weren’t worth much, Jesus would have bargained for us with God, but that’s not what He did. He willingly gave Himself up so that we could live, and every time someone repents and comes to know Him, He celebrates that with His angels in heaven! Remember today that you are valuable to Jesus!
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. Why do you think Jesus is telling the same message in different parables again and again? What point is He trying to get across to the Pharisees and to us?
2. How can you treat people around you, including people you don’t like, as if they were valuable to Jesus?
TRY THIS:
Send a text to someone you know, right now (specifically someone that you think could use encouragement today), and remind them that they are valued by you and by Jesus!
