READ THIS: Luke 12:35-40
35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,
36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.
37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.
38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak.
39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
In this parable, Jesus is trying to teach us about how we should be living until the day He comes back! In case you didn't know, Jesus has promised His people that He will come back to earth once again at the end of time, and this passage reminds us that we will have NO idea when that time is. So how are we supposed to act?
Of all of these verses, my favorite is probably verse 39: if you knew that someone was going to break into your house at 7pm next Saturday, what would you do? You'd be prepared for an intruder, right? OR, what if you had a best friend that you knew your whole life, but hadn't seen in years... and you heard they were going to be coming over at 7pm next Saturday? You'd be waiting at the door, ready to greet your friend with excitement!
Now... what if I said that same best friend was coming soon, but I didn't tell you when? How would you act? That's basically what Jesus is trying to ask us here. We don't know when Jesus may be coming again, but we DO know that He is coming soon, so we must live and act like He is almost here! But what does that look like? It may mean that today needs to be the day you let go of that sin you find yourself repeatedly doing. It may mean that you need to talk to that friend that doesn't know Jesus very well. It could even mean that you take some time right now to ask Jesus what you should do!
Jesus is coming soon, and that is AMAZING news! But we need to be ready for when He comes so that it will be good for us, just like the servants in verses 37-38.
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. If you knew that Jesus was coming back in 24 hours, what would you do till then?
2. Why do you think Jesus decided not to tell us when He would be coming back?
TRY THIS:
Check out this passage from Revelation 21:1-4 about what our world is going to look like when Jesus returns, then GET EXCITED!!!! Jesus is coming soon!
1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
