READ THIS: Luke 17:11-19
11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”
14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.
15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.
17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
In this passage, it can be easy to see the miracle that happens here and miss out on the important details around it, so let's take a closer look! Verse 11 tells us Jesus is traveling along the border of Samaria and Galilee. This was an interesting place to be, because this area was likely full of Jewish people and Samaritans, who did NOT like each other or get along one bit (remember the
story of the Good Samaritan?). As a result, Jesus finds 10 men who all have leprosy, an awful skin disease that people saw as unclean. These men, Samaritans and Jews alike, were outcasts in their respective communities, and they had nowhere to go but Jesus.
As they called out to Jesus and showed their faith, Jesus responded by bringing them healing... not only that, but this meant that these men were no longer outsiders! I can't even imagine how joyful of a moment it would have been for them to show the priests that they were healed and return to their lives, their families, their work and more. However, one person decides, rather than go home or anywhere else, to return to Jesus after being healed to thank Him. Jesus tells this man that his faith has made him well... but wait, weren't all 10 men healed? Jesus is telling us that there are more important things than being healthy, being an insider rather than an outsider, and more. When we believe in Jesus, and our faith and life show it, we are made truly well, and the life we will have forever with Jesus is more valuable than anything we can have here on earth!
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. In your walk with Jesus, can you think of a time where your faith in Jesus has made you well?
2. If you were an outsider your entire life, but when your life was all said and done, you'd be with Jesus... would it be worth it? Why or why not?
TRY THIS:
In the same way that the 10 guys went and told people they were healed, go out and tell someone today of how you've experienced Jesus's healing in your life. Then, like the 1 Samaritan, go back to Jesus and thank Him for what He's done!
