Luke 17:3b-6 — You got the faith to forgive?

READ THIS: Luke 17:3b-6

3b “If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. 4 Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”

5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”

6 He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Yesterday, we learned about how big of a no-no it is to lead someone the wrong way. Right after saying that, Jesus says we need to make sure we call people out who sin against us. SO, when someone tries to lead us the wrong way, we can't just think "oop, they're screwing up, I'm gonna just side shuffle away and therefore not be led astray." Instead, when see someone trying to lead us astray, we call them out.

That same concept applies to any sin someone commits against us, whether it's leading us astray or lying about us or gossiping or anything else you can think of. We call them out, and if they say sorry, you forgive them. No matter how many times that cycle happens, if someone says sorry, we forgive. Which is hard. Which is why the disciples ask for Jesus to increase their faith, because it takes a lot of confidence in Jesus that He'll work everything out to keep forgiving the same person repeatedly. In response, Jesus, in a way, says it's not about having a bunch of faith. All you need is a little faith in Jesus and impossible things can happen! Like forgiving someone who has hurt you over and over!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Who is someone who has hurt you multiple times? Have you ever tried to call them out?

2. What do you think calling someone out should look like? How can you look like Jesus and be humble while also calling someone out?

TRY THIS:

Think about you answers to 1 and 2, and pray, asking God to highlight anyone that you might need to talk with!
