Hebrews 2:5-9 — TRUE Greatness

R EAD THIS: Hebrews 2:5-9 5 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7 You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8 and put everything under their feet.”  In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. 9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? This entire week, we have been saying a very similar message: "Jesus is greater than..." We have talked about how He is greater than angels and how He had the greatest message ever told. But today, we are going to focus more on what makes gr

Hebrews 2:1-4 — Best Messenger = Best Message

R EAD THIS: Hebrews 2:1-4 1 We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? Fun fact: In Jewish tradition, it was believed that an angel was a mediator between God and Moses when Moses received the Law (Exodus 24). This concept is said multiple times in the New Testament (Acts 7:53; Galatians 3:19), so in verse 2 when it talks about a message spoken through angels, it is referring to the Law. The point is that angels were messengers who brought the Law, something that changed how the Israelite

Hebrews 1:10-14 — From Start to Finish

R EAD THIS: Hebrews 1:10-14 10 He also says, “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 11 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. 12 You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.”  13 To which of the angels did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? 14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? The last few days, we have focused on the fact that Jesus is greater than anything and everything, and yesterday's post was specifically about Jesus being greater than angels. They say this because angels worship Him, because He is God's Son, and because He reigns forever. The author has been using a bunch of different Scripture references to back up these claims, and this passage refer

Hebrews 1:4-9 — Jesus > Angels

R EAD THIS: Hebrews 1:4-9 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. 5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”? 6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.”  7 In speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels spirits, and his servants flames of fire.”  8 But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.” WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? Yesterday , we talked about how Jesus was more than just a good messenger or prophet, but that He was God! Today, we are continuing the theme that we have already seen, which is that Jesus is gr

Hebrews 1:1-3 — The Greatest Messenger

R EAD THIS: Hebrews 1:1-3 1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY? The introduction to this letter is full of different themes that we are going to be seeing throughout our time in Hebrews! One of the big themes we will see is that Jesus is greater than anyone and anything, and we are going to be focusing on how Jesus is greater than any messenger or angel these next 3 days.   The author starts by explaining the history of God speaking to His people. God has always longed to be in communication with us, how cool is that?! In the past, He use

WELCOME BACK! Hebrews Introduction

WELCOME BACK TO DEEPLY ROOTED!!! Greetings fellow Bible readers and Jesus journey-ers! We're stoked to get back in the swing of things with y'all. Then, there are some debrief questions for you to dive deeper and an application point. A new addition this year is the Song of the Week! We'll share a song that ties into the theme of the next few verses...if you gaze ahead and have song suggestions, comment below or text! HEBREWS INTRODUCTION: As with any book of the Bible, different Biblical scholars say different things about this letter, but we'll tell you the most probable take. So here it is: Hebrews is a letter written to a group of Jews who were being persecuted for deciding to follow Jesus. It is a letter to encourage them and to show that Jesus truly is the best person to follow despite how hard it was g
