Hebrews 1:4-9 — Jesus > Angels

READ THIS: Hebrews 1:4-9

4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. 5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”? 6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.” 7 In speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels spirits, and his servants flames of fire.”

8 But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.”

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Yesterday, we talked about how Jesus was more than just a good messenger or prophet, but that He was God! Today, we are continuing the theme that we have already seen, which is that Jesus is greater than anyone or anything. In this case, the author compares Jesus to the angels of God and says that He is superior to them and explains three reasons why!

The first reason that Jesus is greater than the angels is because Jesus is God's Son. I mean, after all, God said so (check out Matthew 3:17)! The second reason that Jesus is greater than the angels is because the angels worship Jesus. The passage that the author quotes here is from Deuteronomy, and in some manuscripts such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, it says that angels will bow down to this specific heir of God (AKA Jesus). The last reason that Jesus is greater than the angels is because Jesus will reign forever. The quotes we see in verses 8-9 are from Psalm 45, where the authors speak about an heir of God who will reign on God's throne for eternity: Jesus!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. How do you feel knowing that Jesus reigns over everything now and forever? Excited? Scared? Convicted? All of those things?!

2. Why does it matter that Jesus was the Son of God and not just an angel? Why is it important that He was fully human and God?

TRY THIS:

That Deuteronomy passage we mentioned earlier is all about everyone giving praise to Jesus, and that includes us! Your challenge today is to find at least 2 times today to worship Jesus! If you want some songs we use to worship, check out this playlist, or look at our song of the week below!
