Hebrews 1:10-14 — From Start to Finish

READ THIS: Hebrews 1:10-14

10 He also says, “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 11 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. 12 You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.”

13 To which of the angels did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? 14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

The last few days, we have focused on the fact that Jesus is greater than anything and everything, and yesterday's post was specifically about Jesus being greater than angels. They say this because angels worship Him, because He is God's Son, and because He reigns forever. The author has been using a bunch of different Scripture references to back up these claims, and this passage references two different Psalms... let's check it out!

Verses 10-12 reference Psalm 102, where the author laments their struggles to God, but ultimately remembers that God is the One in control. Those ending verses are what we see quoted here. The author of Hebrews is claiming that Jesus, like God, was there at the foundations of the earth and created all things, including the angels! From the beginning of time till the end of days, our Savior, Jesus Christ, is in control!

The second passage referenced here is from the very beginning of Psalm 110. In this verse, God is speaking to Jesus and calling Him to sit at His right side. Have you ever had a super long day of work, then you FINALLY get to take a seat and relax? This verse is referencing that Jesus's work has been done, and now He can rest till He is called to work again (at the very end of time). The author is basically saying, "has God ever told an angel to sit beside Him because their work is finished? No!" The angels still have work to do, but our Savior's work was done when He conquered over death forever... after all, Jesus literally said "it is finished!"

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. How does knowing that Jesus is our Creator and that His work is finished give you comfort today?

2. Is ALL of Jesus's work truly finished? When Jesus comes back again, what work still needs to be done?

TRY THIS:

Take a few minutes to type or write down a list of things that you think are the best... people, places and things! Then, take a couple minutes writing down why Jesus is even greater than those people, places or things!

SONG OF THE WEEK:

This OLD SCHOOL VBS song is all about Jesus being greater than anyone and anything... check it out!
