Hebrews 2:5-9 — TRUE Greatness

READ THIS: Hebrews 2:5-9

5 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7 You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8 and put everything under their feet.”

In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. 9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

This entire week, we have been saying a very similar message: "Jesus is greater than..." We have talked about how He is greater than angels and how He had the greatest message ever told. But today, we are going to focus more on what makes greatness so great! The author of Hebrews has been quoting lots of different Old Testament scriptures to prove his/her point, and we see that once again in verses 5-8 as they reference Psalm 8. This passage talks about how God blesses His people with glory and honor and dominion, making us a "little lower than the angels" even though we don't remotely deserve it.

But then, the author talks about Jesus, who had all the power of God, yet lowered Himself to the place of a human. He chose to make Himself lower than the angels, and we see in His life that He actually humbled and lowered Himself before us too! Mark 10:45 says that Jesus did not come to us to be served, but to serve! Jesus isn't great just because He is more powerful and mighty than all of us. He's greater than anything and everything because He took all that "greatness" and chose to love broken people like us unconditionally with it!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1.Who are the greatest people you know here on earth? What makes them great?

2. Why did Jesus come to serve us rather than to be served by us?

TRY THIS:

Jesus's greatness was shown through His sacrifice and love for us, so today, you are going to practice some sacrifice! Today, I want you to give up something that you want to do so that you can serve someone else. It could be an activity you normally like to do, some time you normally spend for yourself, or something entirely different. When you serve someone else, think about what Jesus gave up when He chose to serve us!
