Hebrews 1:1-3 — The Greatest Messenger

READ THIS: Hebrews 1:1-3

1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

The introduction to this letter is full of different themes that we are going to be seeing throughout our time in Hebrews! One of the big themes we will see is that Jesus is greater than anyone and anything, and we are going to be focusing on how Jesus is greater than any messenger or angel these next 3 days.

The author starts by explaining the history of God speaking to His people. God has always longed to be in communication with us, how cool is that?! In the past, He used ordinary but very faithful people called prophets to be His messengers and voice, but then something changed... Jesus came! He is God's Son, the perfect messenger and representation of God with the most important message ever told: that anyone who believes in Him will never die, but live forever with Him.

Lots of people believed back then (and still believe today) that Jesus was a really good dude and a great prophet, but nothing else. It's SUPER important that believers in Jesus know that He was so much more than that. He wasn't just a prophet... He was God! He came down and humbled Himself enough to live with us and deliver a personal message for us. What's even crazier is that He didn't have to, He chose to because He loves us!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1.We talk a lot about prayer and talking to God, but we don't talk as much about God wanting to talk to us! Do you ever think about God wanting to talk to you? How does it feel knowing that God actually wants to speak to you?

2. Why is it important to us that Christ wasn't just a good person or a prophet, but that He was and is God?

TRY THIS:

If you haven't tried this before, it may feel real weird... but trust us! Set a timer on your phone for around 5-10 minutes, and take some time to listen to God. Sit, be quiet, and listen. When random things pop up into your head and distract you, don't try to throw those things out. Instead, talk to God about them when they pop up, and see what He may have to say! You may not hear His voice, but our hope is that you can feel some of His peace while you do this!
