Luke 6:46-49 — Check your foundation!!

READ THIS: Luke 6:46-49

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

This is the end of the Sermon on the Mount!

This HUGE crowd of people has been hanging on Jesus's every word. But the thing is...will they actually implement what they've heard? Will we actually implement what we've read? Will we give out grace, call each other out in love, train ourselves to seek after mentors who will help us bear good fruit, and do all the other things Jesus has called us to do?

In the verses above, the same storm hits both houses, but only one house gets wrecked. The house that got wrecked wasn't built on top of a strong foundation (aka a strong base layer). The foundation of the house is something most people can't see at first glance, but it's one of the most important parts of the home, and it takes hard work to build a good one. Jesus says that our foundation for living a life dedicated to Him is simply doing what He says. But, we have to be willing to do what He says when it's hard and when no one else seems to notice.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Why is doing what Jesus says the foundation for us? Shouldn't that be the end result, not the starting place?

2. Why do you think Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with this specific story/point?

TRY THIS:

Name one thing that Jesus said to do in His sermon on the mount and try to actually DO what Jesus says today!! (Feel free to go back and look at prior blogs to jog your memory!)
