Luke 1:1-4 — INTRO TO LUKE!

READ THIS: Luke 1:1-4

1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

HIYA! Welcome to the first day of Luke! On the first day of a new book, we do introductory things and prep you for what the rest of the book will look like. For this book, we will not be italicizing the Scripture above because we will be having longer chunks sometimes, and it can be hard to read the italics (at least so we have heard). So, be prepared for some days to only have a few verses while other days you will have a couple of short paragraphs. It's going to look like that because we want to keep stories together! You'll see what we mean as we chug along. The day after tomorrow will be one of the longest readings!

This book is most likely written by a doctor named Luke, who travelled around with Paul, the dude who wrote a lot of the other books we have been reading, like 1 Thessalonians. What we know about Luke from the verses above is that he was not an eyewitness to Jesus, but that he had investigated about Jesus on his own from the start of his faith journey and wanted to write about Him to this fellow named Theophilus.

Theophilus appears to have been taught about Jesus, but didn't have any research to back up the stories he was hearing, so Luke decided to compile his research together and send it on over to him. Now, we have his research for ourselves, so that we can have some certainty about the things that people say about Jesus!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Do you feel like you have carefully investigated what you've heard about Jesus? If so, how? If not, do you want to?

2. What, if anything, do you feel like you know about Jesus with certainty?

TRY THIS:

Practice some careful investigation by learning more about what you're reading! For example, if you're curious about who Theophilus might be, try reading something like this!
