Ephesians 6:17b — Sword Training
READ THIS: Ephesians 6:17b
13
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil
comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done
everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled
around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the
gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of
faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil
one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which
is the word of God.
*REMINDER* We are going to be going over the armor of God for the next few days... piece by piece! We will be showing all the verses for the section each day, but we really want you to focus on the part in bold each day!
ALL week, we've been learning about different pieces of armor, but today we finally get to be on the attack in this spiritual battle! The only weapon listed in this section of the chapter is the sword of the Spirit. Paul tells us that the sword is actually God's Word, which we know as the Bible. But how is the Bible our weapon? Well, let's learn some sword training with the expert: Jesus!
Jesus went into spiritual battles all throughout His life, but one of the best examples is when He wandered the desert for 40 days early on in His ministry. During this time, the enemy (Satan, or "the satan" if you read the devo about a week ago) came to Him and tempted Him several times. Jesus fought back against the enemy every time by quoting scripture to him. A few days ago, we talked about how the best place to find truth is in God's Word. When we need to attack lies the enemy throws at us, our best weapon will always be the truth we find in God's Word. When we memorize Scripture and hold it in our hearts, it changes us and equips us for battle!
Zephaniah 3:17. The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. The delights in you, He comforts you with His love and He rejoices over you with singing!
