Esther 6:10-14 — ~coinkydink~

READ THIS: Esther 6:10-14

10 “Go at once,” the king commanded Haman. “Get the robe and the horse and do just as you have suggested for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Do not neglect anything you have recommended.”

11 So Haman got the robe and the horse. He robed Mordecai, and led him on horseback through the city streets, proclaiming before him, “This is what is done for the man the king delights to honor!”

12 Afterward Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman rushed home, with his head covered in grief, 13 and told Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him. His advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, “Since Mordecai, before whom your downfall has started, is of Jewish origin, you cannot stand against him—you will surely come to ruin!”

14 While they were still talking with him, the king’s eunuchs arrived and hurried Haman away to the banquet Esther had prepared.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Oof. We can all agree this is a low moment for Haman.

But, if Haman wasn't so wrapped up in what he wasn't getting, he would have seen that he actually was being honored! When Haman suggested how Mordecai should be honored, he said the duty of getting the robe and horse and proclaiming about the honored one should go to "one of the king’s most noble princes." The king chose Haman as a most noble prince! That's a high honor in itself! But, Haman only felt grief. No part of him thought about how he was the only one invited to the queen's banquet for the king or how he was such a noble prince. He just thought about how he wasn't the one being honored.

Haman spent so much time being dejected that he didn't even seem to notice how crazy of a coincidence the whole situation was. Right as he was trying to kill Mordecai, the king just so happened to be reading up on random records, just so happened to notice Mordecai hadn't been honored, and just so happened to end up commanding Haman to carry out the honoring activities. Haman's wife notices the craziness! She can only attribute it to...God! She doesn't say that exactly, but what she does say is that people can't stand against Jews. What separates Jews from anyone else? The God they follow.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. What do you think about coincidences? How often do you think crazy circumstances happen just by chance versus by God's intervention? Do you think this part of the story is showing God working or is showing a coincidence?

2. When is the last time that something good happened, but you couldn't tell because of how upset you were?

TRY THIS:

Ask God for help seeing something good today even when you're confused or upset! Whether it's seeing through a coincidence to see God at work or whether you get an unexpected benefit despite not getting what you wanted orginially!

SONG OF THE WEEK:

Look for places where you can spot God at work!!! Point it out and say "Yes, God!!!"

Comments

  1. A God coincidence I see for me this morning is reading this and my God girl Bible. In it is an “Ask yourself” question, “ Do I live by faith or feeling?, followed by Does my prayer life reflect my faith?”
I think Esther’s prayer life does reflect her faith—I need to be more like Esther!
