Hebrews 12:25-29 — (un)shaken

READ THIS: Hebrews 12:25-29

25 See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27 The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.

28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.”

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

These verses genuinely don't make sense unless you read the verses beforehand. The verses tie back to God coming down and talking to the Israelites on a mountain when He gave the Law to Moses. The whole mountain shook when He spoke, and in Haggai 2:1-9, God promises that the whole world and heavens will be shaken once more

"Once more" can mean a lot of things, but the author defines it for us. When God says "once more," He means "one final time." God is going to shake everything, and everything that can be shaken will be. The only thing left will be the things that don't shake. In more normal English, God is going to make it so that the only thing left at the end of time are the things that don't move away from Him. Only those things/people/beings who remain in Him without moving will remain in the new world that we call Heaven.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. If God were to shake the world/heavens right now, do you think you'd be shaken? What do you think that would look like? (I think of Revelation...)

2. Why is it important that we are getting a Kingdom that can't be shaken (verse 28). What do you think that even means?

TRY THIS:

Arts and crafts time for the bored among you...create your own maraca or snow globe! Then write unshaken on it!!! Keep it somewhere to remind you that you don't want to be shaken like everyone else. (Embrace the childlike faith on this one, haha)

SONG OF THE WEEK:

Welcome to the new song of the week! We're bringing back an older VBS song...think about the words that YOU hear God saying to you today!

  1. I love that ending scripture reference to God being a Consuming Fire. Reminded me of that old Third Day song by the same name. Old song but the words are still relevant today. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=61I1_obnY4U
