Hebrews 11:24-29 — Impressive Resume

READ THIS: Hebrews 11:24-29

24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and the application of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.

29 By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Yesterday we learned about the birth of Moses and how his parents walked in faith, but today's passage focuses on his adult life. It is basically the book of Exodus wrapped up in a few sentences!

First of all, Moses was raised in the Pharaoh's palace after he was found in the Nile but he rejected the worldly treasures and wealth that came with that life because he knew he was called by God to be among God's people. When it says "he was looking ahead to his reward" God did not promise him a million dollars for following his plans, it is talking about his ultimate reward in Heaven, eternal life with the God he was trusting! Similarly, to his parents, he did not fear anyone but God when he took the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery (Exodus 5). He also upheld Hebrew tradition among his people. Lastly, the big kahuna, he parted the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21-31).

While this seems like a pretty impressive resume, Moses had moments when he doubted God, feared talking to people, he even killed a guy! But, God used him despite his shortcomings and saw Moses as who he was made to be, a child of God! That is exactly how He sees all of us- as His perfect children, made new through Him that can do anything with His power in us!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Moses struggled with thinking he was good enough for God's plans. What is one truth from the Bible you can think of that tells us, with God, we can do anything? (hint: Philippians 4:13)

2. Do you believe that through God you are made perfectly in His image? If yes, how does that change how you see yourself? If not, what is stopping you from fully believing that?

TRY THIS:

Write out Philippians 4:13 on a post-it note and put it somewhere you'll see it everyday (ex. bathroom mirror) and remind yourself everyday that God is always working in you!

SONG OF THE WEEK:

Listen to this song and think about different ways Moses lived into the pursuit of the true Promised Land.
