Hebrews 9:23-28 — The Final Sacrifice
READ THIS: Hebrews 9:23-28
23 It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
We have already talked about in the last two days how Jesus was and is the ultimate sacrifice and how His perfect life and sacrifice were necessary to cover us completely, but today we see that Jesus’s sacrifice is also the final sacrifice needed to cover our sin. A lot of times in our walk with Jesus, we think that our sins and mistakes ruin or take away from what Christ did on the cross, but the author explains to us here that Jesus isn’t sitting in heaven, sacrificing Himself again and again and again every time we mess up! His single sacrifice, His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead, was enough for all our sin.
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. Have you ever felt like your sins outweigh Jesus’s sacrifice, or that Jesus’s sacrifice doesn’t cover all your sin?
2. While Jesus’s sacrifice does cover all our sins, including our future mistakes, that doesn’t mean we can sit around and keep sinning like there are no consequences. What are some dangers to thinking that sinning is totally fine because of what Jesus has done for us?

If that second question kind of hit home for you, I want you to do a little extra reading! Check out Romans 6:1-14 for some extra help on how to let sin stay in the past!
