Hebrews 9:16-22 — The Necessary Sacrifice

READ THIS: Hebrews 9:16-22

16 In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17 because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18 This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. 19 When Moses had proclaimed every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people. 20 He said, “This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.” 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

The author of Hebrews makes some really big claims here that we need to understand fully, mainly the idea that without the cost of sacrifice or blood, covenants do not take place and there is no forgiveness. The author explains that when Moses and God came together to make their covenant, Moses took the blood of calves and sprinkled the blood not just over the law, but the people there too (we talked about this some yesterday as well). Sacrifices must be made when it comes to promises with God, and sacrifices must be made when God forgives our sins.

Jesus is the perfect and ultimate example of this truth. Jesus lived a perfect life, and through His sacrifice, He became the greatest sacrifice. Because He loves us so much, He took on the role that none of us were willing to take or even capable of taking! He humbled himself and became the sacrifice we desperately needed to be in a right relationship with God, and His blood sparked a new covenant between God and His people!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Why did Jesus need to be perfect to complete the sacrifice for our sins? Why couldn’t He have just been a normal guy?

2. We have seen a lot of comparisons in Hebrews between Jesus and Moses. How does this example show that Jesus is even greater than Moses?

TRY THIS:

Take a few minutes to think about someone that you are having trouble forgiving or maybe even someone you need to say sorry to. Think about what you may need to sacrifice to find forgiveness with them, but also take some time to thank Jesus for sacrificing everything He had to forgive you!
