Hebrews 8:1-6 — A Superior Ministry

READ THIS: Hebrews 8:1-6

1 Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2 and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being. 3 Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer. 4 If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law. 5 They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” 6 But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Jesus is the ultimate priest, just like we have been learning, He is above it all and has a rightful spot next to God, the creator of the entire world. However, if Jesus wasn't Jesus he would just be a dude from the tribe of Judah. Now, if you can remember, the way you were a priest back then is if you were from the tribe of Levi, so Jesus wouldn't even stand a chance of being a priest if He was not the son of God. This is the greatest example of God using the unexpected people to do the craziest things, like being the Savior of the universe.

Another point being made in this passage is that the churches and temples here on Earth are just a shadow of the ultimate temple, Heaven. The preachers and priests on Earth are just trying to imitate Jesus the best they can. While He serves the highest temple and has received a superior ministry, like it says in verse 6. The reason Jesus' ministry is superior to "theirs," or the priests at the time, is because the new covenant He brought when He died on the cross for all of our sins tops any other covenant made before.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. What is another story in the Bible you can think of when God uses someone unexpected to do something great? How do you think that changed the impact of the "something?"

2. What is the new covenant Jesus made with us in your own words? How does/should that impact the way we live our daily lives?

TRY THIS:

Try giving your first words to God for the rest of this week. I know that sounds weird but one thing you could do is right when you wake up is PRAY before you even pick up your phone or anything! Or one thing I do is say a simple- "good morning God, thank you for giving me this day!"
