Hebrews 7:26-28 — Jesus Oath

READ THIS: Hebrews 7:26-28

26 Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

The author of Hebrews is trying to help a Jewish audience understand that Jesus truly, TRULY is better. Jesus is already perfect, so He doesn't need to intercede between Himself and God before interceding between us and God. His life is more precious than anything, so His sacrifice of His life is all that we need.

A high priest needs to sacrifice for his own sins and the Law recognizes that by having instructions on how priests need to purify themselves. Wouldn't we rather have a priest who is always pure, forever?

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Read Psalm 110 (it's only 7 verses). How is there an "oath" in that Psalm?

2. Why does it matter that this oath came after the law (v28)?

TRY THIS:

Every time you wash your hands today, think about what it means for you that Jesus doesn't have to cleanse Himself to stand up for you!
