Hebrews 7:18-25 — Better Priest, Better Law

READ THIS: Hebrews 7:18-25

18 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless 19 (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God. 20 And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, 21 but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: ‘You are a priest forever.’” 22 Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant. 23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Yesterday, we learned that because there is a new priest in Jesus then that must mean there is a new Law. The old Law doesn't actually make people perfect at all, and if that was its role, then it was useless. Imagine if it was true that it was only through a Levitical priest that people could be saved. But then that priest dies. And the next one dies. And the next one. That does not seem very permanent, and those priests don't seem very powerful, especially since they were only priests because they happened to be born into that line of priests.

With Jesus, God promised long before in Psalm 110 that there would be a priest forever. A priest forever is a permanent priesthood based on someone who can't die! That person is Jesus, who was killed but could not die forever. So, every day, no matter what, we have a priest who can help us be perfect in the eyes of God. A permanent priesthood with perfection forever before God is a much better deal than an impermanent priesthood with a constant uncertain standing before God.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. What do you think the purpose of the Law was if it wasn't to make people perfect?

2. What do you think the new Law of Jesus is?

TRY THIS:

Google the word "intercede," and throughout the day, think where Jesus would have to intercede for you. (Who would He be interceding between?!)
