Hebrews 2:14-18 — Fully God, Fully Human
READ THIS: Hebrews 2:14-18
14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. 17 For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
We also have learned in our past few devos all about how God is greater than the angels. But in verse 16, we are being valued above the angles as well. In Romans 8:29 it says, "For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters." We as humans have a value of that higher than all creation, and Jesus showed that value through dying for all our sins to make us on equal standing with Him!
Lastly, we also learn that Jesus will understand anything we could possibly go through! If you remember, in Matthew 4, Jesus is tempted by Satan in the wilderness. He went through the same human emotions we do when Satan tries to tempt us. What that means for us is that we can pray to Him and trust He will understand and "he is able to help those who are being tempted."
NEW SONG: This week, we see how Jesus lived His life and that points us to living our lives differently! Think about this concept through the new song of the week!
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. Have you ever heard of Jesus being "fully God, fully human?" What do you think that means?
2. Have you ever prayed to God when you feel tempted? Did you feel like He understood, why or why not?
TRY THIS:
The next time you feel like the enemy is trying to tempt you, try to remember to pray to God knowing that He will understand and help you turn away from it!
