Hebrews 2:10-13 — Suffering leads to perfection...?!

READ THIS: Hebrews 2:10-13

10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. 11 Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. 12 He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.” 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

This is the way that these verses make sense to me: Jesus and people in general are similar in that they endure suffering. People suffer in their sin, while Jesus suffered for our sin. It only makes sense that Jesus, the one who saves us from suffering, would have to suffer for it. As someone who has felt what we have felt, He is not ashamed to be seen as a person just like you and me.

Something interesting about verse 10 is the word "perfect." In Acts, that word is translated as "finish." So, somehow Jesus and who He is to us is "made perfect," or "rounded out," or "finished," through His suffering. This is because He could only truly be our savior if He suffered. Someone has to take the penalty for sin, and that's what Jesus chose to do for us.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. In what ways do you think Jesus is like you?

2. Why is suffering important? What is the value in it?

TRY THIS:

Think about the most suffering you have ever endured and name one place you saw Jesus in it. Write it down and keep it in your Bible!
