Hebrews 11:1-3 — ~What's faith gotta do---gotta do with it?~
READ THIS: Hebrews 11:1-3
1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
Verse 1: The Bible defines faith for us! In short, faith is fully believing something to be true even if it can't be seen right now. So, with yesterday's devo, we have to have faith in a judgement day happening! That's something that we can't see, but that we can definitely fully believe.
Verse 2: The ancients, the people even older than the people alive with Jesus, were commended (aka praised or honored) for their faith. For the next two weeks or so, we will be learning about these ancients and their faith!
Verse 3: It takes faith to believe that God created the universe. It also takes faith to believe in the big bang or in evolution. All three are not mutually exclusive, but each is a way of believing in something that cannot be seen. Something that we learn here is that faith isn't just about the future, it is also about the past! That's important to keep in mind because for these next two weeks, we have to have faith that the stories of the ancients are true so we can learn from them!
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. What do you think is true about the beginning of the world? What do you think is the line between faith and science? Do you think the analysis of verse three is accurate?
2. How would you define faith to someone who asked?
TRY THIS:
Name five things that you have faith in -- two of them should be religious/spiritual and two of them should be something about life. Think about what makes you have faith in the things you wrote down!
