Hebrews 10:24-31 — Life until the "Day"

READ THIS: Hebrews 10:24-31

24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Yesterday's passage ended with a reminder to hold onto our faith in Jesus, and verses 24-25 show us how believers in Christ can do that as a community! It starts by telling us to point each other on towards Christ's example, not give up on one another, and encourage one another. Those are three big things that I know I can struggle with and I know many believers can grow in! We are supposed to be living up to Christ's standard every day until the "Day" Jesus comes back!

Then, the passage shows us what happens if we do the opposite of those three things. If we keep on sinning, even when we know it's wrong, we are essentially looking at the most powerful being in the universe and saying "nah... I know better." It's like looking at Christ's sacrifice and love for us and saying, "eh... I don't want that." That's why the end of this passage seems so severe, because it is! To know God is there, but to still reject Him on the "Day" He comes to judge us is truly a "dreadful thing."

THINK ABOUT IT:

1.Think of the three things listed in verses 24-25 (spurring others on, not giving up on others, and encouragement). Which of these do you need to grow in most this week?

2. Sometimes, when we see others around us doing wrong toward us or others, we want to get payback. However, verse 30 tells us that God says He is the one to avenge! Why doesn't God want us to get revenge on others?

TRY THIS:

Whatever you thought of for question 1 today, it's time to put it to practice! If you need to spur someone toward Jesus today, be bold and do it! If you need to let go of a grudge or stop avoiding that one person who bugs you, let it go and love them like Jesus does! If you need to practice encouragement, then give it to someone that you know needs some today!

SONG OF THE WEEK:

Listen to this song...how would it sound if at the end of the song, the guy put back on his chains?
