Hebrews 10:1-7 — A Shadow of Things to Come!

READ THIS: Hebrews 10:1-7

1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2 Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. 3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins. 4 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; 6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. 7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—I have come to do your will, my God.’”

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

In this passage, the author explains that the old law and old way of doing things (messing up, sacrificing to God, being forgiven, then repeat) was never the perfect solution to sin. In fact, they say instead that it was simply a shadow of the things to come, or really the One to come: Jesus! When Jesus came, He made one sacrifice that covered all of our sins, even the ones to come... just like we talked about for the last few days here on the blog.

But wait... Jesus came in and took all of our sin for us, but we are still here sinning! Does that mean that we still aren't at the "perfect" solution to sin yet? In a way, yes! One day, Jesus will come back for good, and when He does, sin and pain and shame will all be gone forever and ever... the perfect solution! But what's amazing about Jesus and His sacrifice is that we get to live into that reality today! In the same way that the law was a shadow of Christ coming to sacrifice Himself, our lives can be like a shadow (or preview) of heaven! We may still sin, but we know that Jesus's sacrifice cleanses us completely, and every day we can choose to live into that promise and sacrifice!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1.What do you think worship will be like in heaven one day?

2. How can you start living like Jesus has completely cleansed you forever!

TRY THIS:

Every time you notice your shadow today, think about the fact that the joy and worship we get to experience in life are simply a shadow or preview of the amazing worship we will have in heaven forever!

SONG OF THE WEEK:

Listen to this song and think about living like Jesus really has made us new! What does it mean that life begins with Him?!
