Luke 24:25-35 — Break Bread!

READ THIS: Luke 24:25-35

25 He [Jesus] said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

The past few days, we've been reading about how no one believes what the women say about Jesus being risen from the day. Yesterday, Jesus walks on the Emmaus road with two disciples who don't realize they are walking with Jesus and who start to explain how sad they are about Jesus, despite what the women have said.

Jesus, in response, kind of reams them out, and explains how the Old Testament points to the fact that the real Messiah would have to suffer what Jesus suffered in order to be the Messiah! When they finally sit down to eat, the disciples realize that Jesus is actually Jesus,. After He disappears, they hustle back to Jerusalem to tell everyone that what the women said was true. But, Jesus had already beaten them to the punch by showing up to Simon Peter (most likely at the beach where He asks the famous question, "Do you love me?").

What we learn here is the answer to yesterday's question of "what would have to happen for you to believe in Jesus if you didn't already?" What has to happen is we have to break bread with Him. We can't just walk around Him. We have to sit with Him and gaze at Him and fellowship with Him. That's when we get to see Him for who He truly is, and that's when we get motivated to run and tell others!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. How have you broken bread with Jesus in the past? What would it look like for you to break bread with Him?

2. What prophecies point to Jesus in the Old Testament? Can you think of anything, whether it's from Psalms or Isaiah or even the law itself? Genesis?

TRY THIS:

Plan something this week that will help you break bread with Jesus today! Fun fact, that's usually best done with food and other people, too!
