Luke 24:1-8 — He is risen!!!

READ THIS: Luke 24:1-8

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’”

8 Then they remembered his words.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Yesterday, we talked about how some women were preparing to bring spices and perfumes for Jesus's body, but they had to wait a day because it was the Sabbath. The time finally comes for them to go to the body of Jesus... but He isn't there!!! Can you imagine what their first thoughts could have been? Most likely, they thought His body was taken by someone (we know this because of some of the other Gospel accounts of this story), but they don't have to think long. Suddenly, two men that we can assume to be angels appear, and in just three words, they share the greatest news we have to share with others: He is risen!

These three words have more power than we often think about! If you remember, Jesus took on the entire weight of our sin, our brokenness, and our shame. He bore all of those things on the cross and took them to the grave. Despite that unbearable weight, Jesus conquered sin, death, and shame forever by rising from the grave! The great news about these words is that we are given the chance to leave the grave behind and walk out of that tomb with Jesus forever! As the women remember what Jesus said He would do, we can only imagine the joy they must have felt. It's our job to take that joy and the power behind "He is risen" and share it with those around us.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. If Jesus rose from the grave and defeated sin, then why do we still mess up and struggle with sin?

2. Jesus told plenty of people exactly what He was going to do, yet they still forgot. Why is it so hard for us to remember what Jesus has done and is doing in our lives?

TRY THIS:

Take some time to write or type down what Jesus conquering over sin means in your life right now! You can even comment it on this post!
