Luke 23:17-25 — Peer Pressured into Evil and also Freedom
READ THIS: Luke 23:17-25
17/18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!” 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.) 20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
Pilate was about to release Jesus, but the crowd shouts back to release a guy named Barabbas instead. The curious reader might want to know how in the world that makes sense. Why should Pilate be releasing anyone? What does Barabbas have to do with Jesus? Well, it was actually the custom of the governor to release a prisoner during the festival that was happening in Jerusalem. So, when Pilate mentioned that he would "release" Jesus, he was indicating that he would use his release on Jesus. The crowd rejected the offer and picked another prisoner for Pilate to release instead.
The crowd let free a man who had murdered people and who had rebelled against the Roman authority, while sentencing to death a completely innocent man that the Roman government itself didn't want to crucify. It feels incredibly unfair. Except if you see humanity as Barrabas. All of us have actually done something wrong. We've harmed our friends and we've rebelled against God. We actually deserve punishment. But, Jesus takes our place, even though He didn't do any of the things we did. Jesus takes our punishment anyway, even though anyone looking at the situation would think that was crazy. Why would God let us go free and take Jesus instead? For Pilate, he did it because he felt pressured to do it. For God, it's because He desperately loves us and wants us to be free.
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. What do you think Barabbas felt when he was let off death row? How can you relate to Barabbas here?
2. Is it fair that Jesus died? How or how not? Try to think about it from the perspective of yourself, the Roman government, and then God!
TRY THIS:
Read over the passage and see where you can spot the peer pressure happening. Then, imagine if you were in the story and could stop the peer pressure. Imagine how you would do it!
