Luke 22:49-54a — Secret Sins
READ THIS: Luke 22:49-54
49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. 51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.”
54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
The other big thing we can learn from this is what Jesus says in verses 52 and 53: it is easy for us to make bad decisions when we think we are in the dark! Jesus says the Pharisees could have taken him away, arrested Him, or questioned Him during many of the times they saw Him before, but they chose to wait till the nighttime to do so. As we have been reading in other passages, the Pharisees were terrified of how the world saw them, so they chose to make this awful choice when they thought no one, including God, would see them. We can also do this, right? It is easy for us to think our sin isn't that bad when no one is watching, but our God is always watching us!
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. How can you love your enemies today? What would it look like to show them Jesus?
2. Is there a sin you think you can get away with because no one sees it? Take some time to talk to Jesus about it, and leave that sin behind!
DID YOU KNOW?
