Luke 22:39-48 — Fully Human, Fully God

READ THIS: Luke 22:39-48

39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

If you knew that you were about to be betrayed and ultimately killed very soon, what would you do during those last few moments or days? Jesus could have been doing anything during this time. He could have tried to preach and share the good news with those who hadn't heard Him yet or even continue to spend time with His disciples like He was at the last supper earlier. Instead, Jesus went to the Mount of Olives, His "usual" place to spend time with God, and He prayed the entire night! We also see the disciples fall short of the model Jesus sets for them in different ways. The disciples with Jesus doze off during the night because they don't fully understand what was coming. Judas arrives and tries to act like Jesus is His good friend, even though he is betraying Him! In both of these things, we see that Jesus was more than a man with limited knowledge... He was God!

However, one of the most important things we can learn from this passage is that Jesus really was fully human even though He was also fully God! Jesus felt the frustration, the temptation, and the worry that anyone could have felt knowing that He would soon suffer, and He brought all of those things to His Father. Because He did it this way, we see that God brought Him strength despite the worry! He didn't completely take it away (we literally see Him in anguish the very next verse), but He gave Him the strength to push through it. In the same way, we can trust that God will give us the strength we need to get through our trials, but only if we try to go through them with Him rather than alone.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Where is your "usual" place? Where do you find it easier to spend time with Jesus, and how can you spend more time there this week?

2. Why is it important that Jesus was both fully God and fully human? How does that make His sacrifice even more powerful for us?

TRY THIS:

Try to take some time every day this week at your "usual" place to pray! If you don't have a "usual" place, try to make one. For me, I need to be somewhere away from things that easily distract me, so try that!
