Luke 8:19-21 — Jesus's Fam!
READ THIS: Luke 8:19-21
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
Ummmm, hold up, is Jesus dissing on His family here? I mean, I know He is God's Son and all, but at first glance, this passage makes it seem like He is kind of hating on His family! However, if we really look into this passage, it's actually a lot more about us than it is about the family of Jesus. In case you forgot, the last few passages have features Jesus telling and explaining different parables to a large crowd as well as His disciples. Clearly, the crowd has gotten so large that Mary and Jesus's brothers (yes... Jesus had brothers!) couldn't even reach Him. When someone told Jesus "hey dude, your fam is here and they wanna see you," Jesus responded by explaining who His real family was: "those who hear God’s word and put it into practice."
This doesn't mean that Jesus is taking a jab at His family or saying they aren't a part of His real family. Rather, Jesus is trying to explain that if we want to be a part of His family (God's family), all we need to do is be people who know God's Word, love God's Word, and follow God's Word. Jesus is also trying to show that in God's family, there aren't people who will be treated better or worse than anyone else! You're either in the fam, or you're not!
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. Do you beleive you are a part of Jesus's family? Why or why not?
2. Why is it important to not just know the Word, but to follow it?
TRY THIS:
In case you didn't know, Jesus had a few brothers (at least 4... James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas). What's so cool about today's passage in particular is that one of Jesus's brothers, James, uses Jesus's words about not just listening to the Word, but doing what it says! Check out James 1:22...
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

I believe I am a part of Jesus’s family because of how much I see a Christian practice come into play in my life, now believe me there’s PLENTY I could work on. But I see myself doing things in my life that are from God’s word.
ReplyDeleteI think it is important to follow the word because otherwise you aren’t really believing. It’s like when school teaches you something you never use in your life, at that point what you learned is useless, however what the word shows us is not useless, it is important, which is why we need to use it in our lives
