READ THIS: Luke 19:36-40
36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. 37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
"Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord" is a reference to Psalm 118:26. Psalm 118 is a celebratory song about entering the Promised Land and being saved by the Messiah. By quoting Psalm 118 to Jesus as He entered Jerusalem, the Jews were proclaiming Jesus as their King, as the promised Messiah. THAT'S why the Pharisees were mad about it. They didn't think Jesus was the Messiah, so they thought the people were blaspheming. That's why they wanted Jesus to rebuke the disciples and the other Jews (in other words, to tell them to stop chanting verse 38). But, Jesus refused to deny who He was/is by responding that even if He did tell them to be quiet, creation itself would announce who He was/is...the Messiah!
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. Do you really think creation worships Jesus? Why or why not? And if yes, how so?
2. Why was everyone so joyful in this story? What do you think was so special about Jesus riding in on a donkey? Any guesses?
