Luke 18:31-34 — Did that just happen???

READ THIS: Luke 18:31-34

31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. 32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.” 34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

As believers in Jesus, it can be really easy to look at the things Jesus did and lose sight at how incredible they are. These verses can be so easy to look at and miss the magnitude of what really just happened... Jesus, days before it actually happened, completely predicts exactly what will happen to Him and tells His disciples this clearly. What's even crazier about this is that this is the third and final time He does this (9:21-22, 9:43-45). Verse 34 tells us that the disciples didn't understand what Jesus was saying at the time, but we can assume that in the days that followed after that they remembered these conversations and realized that Jesus (as well as the prophets in the Old Testament) predicted every one of these things to happen.

For us, this passage gives us comfort and hope! We can find comfort knowing that our God is in control of every situation we face, no matter how dark they seem. We can find hope here because we know that Jesus is not just the One who fulfilled prophecies through His life on earth, but that one day He will come again and fulfill the rest of them! In the chapters and passages to come, Jesus and the disciples are going to go through it, but try to remember that in these passages and in our lives today, God is always in control.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Why do you think God stopped the disciples from understanding what Jesus was meaning?

2. How can we remember how big of a deal it is that Jesus not only died for us, but that He fulfilled everything He said He would do?

TRY THIS:

For question number 2... One of the best ways I can think of is taking the time to actually thank God for what He has done through His Son! Take a couple of minutes today to do just that, and take some time to do whatever else you thought of for question 2!
