Luke 17:30-37 — The bad kind of salty...

READ THIS: Luke 17:30-37

30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. 32 Remember Lot’s wife! 33 Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35 Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”

36/37 “Where, Lord?” they asked.

He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

First off... if you're confused why there is a "36/37" there, it is because some versions of the Bible have the verse listed as 36, and some have it listed as 37! Now let's talk about this passage! Jesus is talking about the end of time here (also known as the last days or judgement day), and He gives us some really big lessons to hold onto.

The first big lesson is that we need to be willing to leave everything of this world behind when Jesus comes. Jesus references Lot's wife, which comes from a story in Genesis 19. In the story, God warns Lot and his family to leave their town behind and not look back at the destruction of it, but Lot's wife chooses to turn around! As a result, she is turned into a pillar of salt (yes... that actually happened). In the same way, when Jesus comes, we can't look back at our world... we must chase after Jesus and leave everything behind.

The other big lesson here is that we don't know when the day will come! Verses 33-35 show us that when Jesus comes, we won't be sitting around waiting for it. Rather, the day will come unexpectedly, so we must be prepared for the day when it happens.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. What is something in this world that could be hard to let go of for Jesus? What makes it so easy to hold onto?

2. If Jesus was coming back tomorrow morning at 10am... what would you do differently? Who would you tell? How would you act?

TRY THIS:

Think about what you answered for question number 1, and then take some time to ask Jesus to help you out! Ask Him to help you discern if it is something you need to let go of or if it is simply something you need to hold less tightly.
