Luke 8:1-3 — There IS a point

READ THIS: Luke 8:1-3

1 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

After Jesus dines with a Pharisee and forgives a sinful woman who busts in to clean His feet in the middle of dinner, Jesus starts traveling again, going town to town. But, Luke makes it clear that Jesus didn't go alone! He went with the twelve disciples and a bunch of women.

These women had been troubled by evil spirits and diseases, but then, not only did they accept healing from Jesus, they also accepted what Jesus said about the kingdom of God, shown by their willingness to follow Him as He proclaimed the good news. The end of verse three points out that the women were not just dead weights leeching onto the disciples, but they were supporting the disciples from their own money.

Women back in the day were not as well respected, and they weren't allowed to be disciples in Jewish tradition. But, Jesus took on the women who were ill and troubled, healed them, and allowed them to follow Him. Then, the women rose to the occasion and provided for Jesus' people.

We can sometimes look at other people and wonder what help they could possibly be and decide that we shouldn't bother with them..."there's no point; it won't get me anywhere." But, that's not how Jesus viewed people. Instead, He saw them as people He loved, and out of that love and belonging, people rose to fill others' needs!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Who in your life do you avoid because "there's no point in being nice to them?"

2. What's one way you could try to include that person in your kindness and love, anyway?

TRY THIS:

You already know....do that thing you said in number 2!!! Feel free to tell someone your plan, or post it below, for accountability!
