Luke 7:18-23 — He's Here!!!
READ THIS: Luke 7:18-23
18 John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” 20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
Once again, we see Jesus being asked if He is truly the Messiah, this time by John the Baptist himself through some of his followers. Remember, people in the Jewish faith have been waiting for the Messiah, the Savior of the world, to come and save them, but many of these people had a specific picture of what this Messiah would be like. Many of them thought their savior would be a powerful king, a mighty ruler, or a unstoppable warrior... and the truth is that Jesus is all of those things and more, but He didn't look that way!
Jesus tells the followers of John exactly who He is in verses 21-23. He says He is a healer, a defeater of evil, a sight-giver, a miracle-worker, and so much more! This carpenter from Bethlehem may not have been the exact person that many Jews were waiting for, but Jesus truly was the Messiah! His actions, His love for others, His powerful words, and His wisdom are just a few of the ways we can see that clearly.
This is GREAT news! John asked Jesus, "should we be expecting someone else to come?" but the answer is NO WAY! Our Savior has come, and His work is done! In our lives, we can have plenty of moments where we feel lost, alone, and defeated... but in those moments, remember our Savior has come, He has conquered evil and death, and He reigns forever.
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. Why do you think Jesus didn't simply say "yes" when He was asked about being the Messiah? Why did He choose to answer it the way He did?
2. How does remembering that Jesus's work is finished help us when we are hurting, sad, etc.?
