Luke 11:33-36 — I spy with my little eye...

READ THIS: Luke 11:33-36

33 “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

This section of verses is a little confusing, but it helps to remember the context. The past few days, we have been breaking down Jesus' response to people saying He was somehow using demonic powers and that He needed to show a real sign from Heaven to prove that He wasn't. This is the very end of His response to that accusation and demand.

It's possible that Jesus is turning everything around on the crowd. It's not actually up to Jesus to be the only sign of Heaven or to be the one who clearly points out everything. Instead, if people practice looking for God, then they can spot God on their own, AND they can begin to act more like God's child when they fill themselves up with God.

When we neglect our relationship with God, we become unhealthy and our body is full of darkness. We forget to look for Him and His signs, and suddenly we think He isn't working at all, and we're living in a dark world without Him. But, if we keep ourselves trained to be on the lookout for God, then we are healthy and can be filled with God and His light/goodness!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Do you feel like your eyes are "healthy" the way Jesus is talking about here? Are your eyes looking for God and His signs? Why or why not?

2. Do you think you're filled with lightness or darkness? What do you think that means?

TRY THIS:

Reading these verses reminded me strongly of Titus 1:15-16. Read the verses below and see how you think it ties into the verses we read today!

15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. 16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.
