Luke 10:1-16 — The Kingdom Is Near!

READ THIS: Luke 10:1-16

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.

8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you. 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’

12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. 13 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.

16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

In this passage, Jesus sends out 72 of his followers in groups of 2 (so, 36 groups) to go out and share the good news about Jesus to different towns. In verse 2, Jesus says "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few," which is a fancy way of saying that there are A LOT of people who don't know about the good news yet, but only very few who are actually going out and sharing that news with others! This is a HUGE reminder for us that we are called to be those kind of workers in every space we are in: our homes, our schools, our workplaces, our friend groups, our relationships, and more!

In the verses that follow, Jesus gives His followers clear instructions on how they should share the good news and what they will be expecting. Jesus doesn't hide the fact that his followers are going to be put in danger... in fact, He says they will be like lambs among wolves!

However, we see that Jesus has a message that needs to be given to people, whether they accept Jesus or not: "The kingdom of God has come near." Verse 16 shows us that the way people respond and care for Jesus's disciples is the way they would accept Him, and this message brings either some amazing news or some not-so-great news depending on how people receive Jesus. For those that accept Jesus, knowing that Jesus's kingdom is coming brings excitement, joy, and hope! For those that don't, the reminder of Jesus's kingdom coming is a massive warning to repent and turn from their sinful ways.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Can you think of the places that God has called you to go out and harvest in?

2. If Jesus loved His disciples, why would He send them out like "lambs among wolves?" What lesson was He trying to teach them?

TRY THIS:

People aren't entirely sure if Jesus sent out 70 people, or 72 (the NIV says 72!) This group of people is actually never mentioned again in Scripture... but some people believe that many of this group were part of the large group known to be gathered together during Pentecost in Acts 1!
