Luke 6:12-19 — Prayer hunt!
READ THIS: Luke 6:12-19
12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
Prayer is powerful. Look above at what happens after Jesus spends a night in prayer...the twelve apostles are chosen and great numbers of people are healed. The gospel of Luke (you know, the one that we're reading right now) highlights how often Jesus prayed before acting. If you keep your eyes peeled for the rest of the book, you'll see that right before anything major happens, Jesus prays!
For us, when we're having a hard time knowing what to do next or we feel like something big is about to happen, it might help us out a LOT if we choose to pray like Jesus did. If JESUS had to pray, then those of us who are only human and not also God might need to pray, too....
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. Do you believe prayer is powerful? Why or why not?
2. When is a time that you have seen prayer change something? Feel free to comment below with your answer!
TRY THIS:
As we keep reading, count the number of times Jesus is listed as praying! And that's just when He was seen doing it!!
