Luke 4:1-13 — Satan Feelin' Salty
READ THIS: Luke 4:1-13
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’” 5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” 9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
These verses describe Jesus's 40 days in the desert, just before the beginning of His ministry. During this time, Jesus was probably feeling hungry (at a minimum... I mean He didn't eat for 40 days), lonely, and exhausted. During this time, out of all the times Satan could have come, he chose this one to tempt Jesus. The enemy loves to wait till we are at our "weakest" to tempt us, but the Word tells us that when we are weakest, God shows up the strongest. Satan tries to tempt Jesus 3 times, and each time Jesus says "no way," and proves to the enemy why God's way is better. Jesus had the ability to do everything Satan asked Him to do, but He knew that doing these things would not be what God called Him to do.
This passage teaches us a couple of super important lessons! For starters, Jesus has been tempted, just like any of us! He understands what it feels like, how hard it can be to say no, but He also models the way for us to choose God instead of temptation. The second big thing here is that Jesus shows us how to say no to temptation. Jesus didn't waste a second of His time talking to the enemy with His own words, and He's the Son of God! Instead, He chose to quote Scripture to Satan, and God's Word is the ultimate defense against the enemy's temptations. Things are no different today! Use God's Word to keep the enemy down and leave him feelin' salty that he lost...
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. What does Satan try to tempt you with? Why is it so appealing to you?
2. Have you ever used God's Word to defend yourself from temptation? Take some time to check out some scriptures that could relate to your topic!
