Proverbs 26:13-16 — You sluggard!!!!
READ THIS: Proverbs 26:13-16
13 A sluggard says, “There’s a lion in the road, a fierce lion roaming the streets!” 14 As a door turns on its hinges, so a sluggard turns on his bed. 15 A sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth. 16 A sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven people who answer discreetly.WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
I want to start calling people sluggards and make it a thing. I feel like it could catch on. But, in all honesty, I should start calling myself a sluggard when I deserve it. But how do we know if we deserve to be called a sluggard...? (fyi, a sluggard is a lazy person!)
There are four descriptions of what a sluggard is, so let's dive in with the Liz/Dan Translation of the Bible:
13 Lazy people make excuses for why they can't do something, even if it doesn't make sense at all...like saying they can't go somewhere because there's a lion in the street. (Is there really a lion....?!) 14-15 Lazy people do a few things, but they don't do anything that's actually important. It's like how a door moves, but it doesn't really go anywhere. Or it's like reaching out to get food, having it in your hand, and then never getting around to eating it. The action doesn't lead to an actual goal. In other words, they productively procrastinate. 16 Lazy people think that they're super wise and smart (probably because they get out of extra work), even in comparison to super reasonable and wise people. They come up with their own way of doing things that cuts corners, and sees that as far wiser than doing things the correct way.
For clarification, in verse 16, the word discreetly might be better translated "sensibly."
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. All of us are lazy in our own ways. Do you tend to a) make excuses, b) productively procrastinate, OR c) cut corners?
2. What is a way for you to be less lazy in that specific way (a, b, or c)?
TRY THIS:
Laziness is actually a sin, and, just like all sins, some people struggle with it more than others. Try ranking laziness with lust, anger, jealousy, pride, gluttony, and greed. If laziness is in your top 3 struggles, your challenge is to tell someone TODAY that you struggle with laziness.
