Proverbs 25:23-28 — Simple-ees!

READ THIS: Proverbs 25:23-28

23 Like a north wind that brings unexpected rain is a sly tongue—which provokes a horrified look. 24 Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife. 25 Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land. 26 Like a muddied spring or a polluted well are the righteous who give way to the wicked. 27 It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it honorable to search out matters that are too deep. 28 Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Sometimes, when we read all of these similes (a comparison using the words “like” or “as”), it can get complicated. It can leave us asking “is he really talking about this stuff, or is it all a symbol for something else?” And sometimes it can even leave us confused on what the point is! So let’s break down each one of these comparisons below and find the actual point behind them. Let’s take some similes and make them simple-ees! Yeah, I know… that was bad. Let’s just go!
  • Verse 23: Don’t use your words to trick or deceive others… it’ll hurt and surprise them!
  • Verse 24: Live at peace with those that you live with… make the home you share a place where they can see Jesus, not trouble!
  • Verse 25: Good news is refreshing to the people who hear it… think about what the Gospel can do to someone who has never heard it!
  • Verse 26: A well is supposed to be beneficial to everyone around it, but it can’t do that if it gets polluted… when we pursue wickedness, it can hurt us and those around us!
  • Verse 27: God gives us amazing gifts (like wisdom), and they can be sweet… but when we seek out those gifts more than loving the One who gives them to us, it can be dangerous!
  • Verse 28: We are supposed to be on guard when it comes to temptations… when we lack self-control, temptations and sin can waltz right into our lives!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. What tricks do you like to do to help understand the Bible better?

2. Which of these lessons hit home the most for you? How can you apply even one of these verses to your life right now?

TRY THIS:

Write down a word or a phrase from one of these verses on your hand, a sticky note, or somewhere that you will see it. Commit today to start that applying that verse to your life all throughout this week!
