Proverbs 25:1-7a — Okay, king.
READ THIS: Proverbs 25:1-7a
1 These are more proverbs of Solomon, compiled by the men of Hezekiah king of Judah: 2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings. 3 As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings are unsearchable. 4 Remove the dross from the silver, and a silversmith can produce a vessel; 5 remove wicked officials from the king’s presence, and his throne will be established through righteousness. 6 Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence, and do not claim a place among his great men; 7 it is better for him to say to you, “Come up here,” than for him to humiliate you before his nobles.WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
All of these verses have to do with kings. We learn 1 thing about God, 2 things about earthly kings, and 1 thing about us. So let's break it down:
1 Thing About God:
- God doesn't need to tell us everything. He has things that He keeps secret and things that He reveals. Sometimes we get upset because we want to know everything, but there is some important reason that He does not disclose why.
2 Things About Earthly Kings:
- Kings are put in position by God. At the very least, the order of authority is approved of by God because He is a god of order. That makes it confusing to understand exactly why certain kings were ever allowed to be in charge and what goes on in their heads and hearts, but it is right for kings to continually seek God. If it is their job to seek things out, and it's God job to conceal things, then you can see how the kings should be all about asking God where to search.
- Kings are influenced by others, and sometimes there are negative influences that need to be removed.
1 Thing About Us:
- We sometimes think we're more important than we are. Yes, we are each made by God and are special, BUT when we try to toot our own horn, it usually doesn't end too well. It is better to think that we don't deserve something and be happily surprised than think that we deserve everything and be continually disappointed.
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. What does the 1 Thing About God and the 2 Things About Earthly Kings say about us???
2. How does this apply to our lives? Is this ONLY talking about kings?
TRY THIS:
Think about a place where you feel extremely comfortable and where you feel like you deserve to be there. Decide now on how to make sure you are humble even in that space!
