Proverbs 24:5-6 — Wise Saying #22

READ THIS: Proverbs 24:5-6, Wise Saying #22

5 The wise prevail through great power, and those who have knowledge muster their strength. 6 Surely you need guidance to wage war, and victory is won through many advisers.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

If you know anything about things like war and history, you know that power isn’t the only thing that wins wars. While it certainly doesn’t hurt to be stronger and/or more powerful than your opponent in battle, strategy and wisdom are equally as important when it comes to winning battles. The Bible is full of stories of God giving people and armies victory in battle despite being less powerful than their enemies. One of the best examples of this that we see is in Judges 7, where God takes an army of 300 people and defeats an army so large that humans couldn’t begin to count how big it was! So how did they do it? Super strength? Luck? The truth is that they had the wisest counsel an army could have: God!

This passage teaches us that the wise prevail in battle through power, but also guidance. Just like how victory is given in battle to the person with better strategy, we will find success in our own battles if we depend on wise guidance. So who should be our “advisers?” God is certainly the best choice, and we have the ability to seek His wisdom through prayer, but God also moves through His people! Wisdom can be found when we humble ourselves and seek the advice of people who love us like Jesus does and have the honesty to point us to God’s Word over anything else!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. When you seek advice, who do you ask? What makes that person a good adviser?

2. Have you ever asked a bunch of people for advice, but you were really just looking for someone to agree with what you already wanted to do? Why is humility such a big part of wisdom?

TRY THIS:

This week, I want God to be your first choice when you need advice from someone! Before you ask anyone for advice with something, take some time to either pray or read God’s Word. Ask God for wisdom, and ask Him for good advisers to help you out!
