Proverbs 24:10-12 — Wise Saying #25
READ THIS: Proverbs 24:10-12, Wise Saying #25
10 If you falter in a time of trouble, how small is your strength! 11 Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. 12 If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done?
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
This passage teaches us several important lessons about struggling and adversity. Our lives are full of trouble and hardship, and one of the biggest truths about being a follower of Jesus is that when we give Jesus our life, trouble doesn't go away. So, let's see what this passage teaches us about trouble when it does come!
The first thing we learn about trouble is that it reveals our strength. Notice how verse 10 tells us about people who fall apart in times of trouble, calling them weak... ouch. However, it is not adversity that makes us weak! Adversity reveals weakness. But here's the best part: our God works best in the midst of our weakness! Paul says that God's power shows up perfectly when we are weak (2 Cor. 12:9-10), so we can trust that, when trouble does come, we will be alright as long as we depend on God's strength rather than our own!
Verses 11 and 12 talk about a different kind of struggle: the spiritual kind! Here, Solomon urges us to rescue and hold back people who are headed toward the path of sin and death. When we see those around us making choices that will lead them toward death, we can choose to care for them or choose to be indifferent about it, just like the person in verse 12. But how does God feel about those people, and how does He feel about us?! God saw us walking toward death, and He gave His own Son so that we could live. If we want to love those around us like He does, we must keep our eyes open for people headed toward death and have the courage and boldness to rescue them!
