Proverbs 23:29-35 — Wise Saying #19
READ THIS: Proverbs 23:29-35, Wise Saying #19
29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? 30 Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. 31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! 32 In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. 33 Your eyes will see strange sights, and your mind will imagine confusing things. 34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging. 35 “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt! They beat me, but I don’t feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?”
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
Cause and effect. Input and output. One thing leads to another. In this passage, someone's appearance and attitude is described and just based on the effect, the cause is known. Someone who is complaining and kind of beat up with bloodshot eyes is someone who has been drinking a lot. At first, alcohol can seem like it is just a good thing that helps people be social and for some people tastes good, but if we aren't careful, it bites like a snake! More than that, when we drink too much, we don't have the ability to realize how much we are hurting ourselves with it. All of the bad outputs of it mean nothing to us anymore and we just see the shiny good input. We need to be alert, otherwise we end up like Adam and Eve....they saw the shiny input of a fruit, but completely ignored the output that God warned them of...death.
