Proverbs 23:22-25 — Wise Saying #17

READ THIS: Proverbs 23:22-25, Wise Saying #17

22 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. 23 Buy the truth and do not sell it— wisdom, instruction and insight as well. 24 The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him. 25 May your father and mother rejoice; may she who gave you birth be joyful!

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

This passage is another great lesson on the true value of wisdom compared to the things our world sees as valuable. We've seen a few verses throughout Proverbs talk about this, but in case you missed it, most of Proverbs is told in the perspective of a father giving advice to his child. Many of us can probably relate to the battle of tug of war we can have in our head... do we follow what our parents tell us to do, or do we follow what we really want to do? Do we follow what we know to be wise, or do we follow the thing that looks so tempting?

We know the better choice is wisdom, but why? This passage gives us that why: wisdom gives us life and joy to ourselves and even those around us! In this passage, the ones who receive joy are not just the child, but also his parents. When we choose wisdom, we certainly will experience joy and life from Jesus, but that wisdom and joy can spread to our communities, our families, and even strangers around us!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Why is it so hard to choose wisdom sometimes, even when we know it is the better choice?

2. Who is someone around you that can be influenced by the wise choices you can take? Who can learn from your wisdom?

TRY THIS:

Find that person you can influence with your wisdom and share with them soemthing that God has taught you lately, whether that is a life lesson, something you've read, or something else! Share it here too in the comment section!
