Proverbs 22:17-21 — Wise Saying #1

READ THIS: Proverbs 22:17-21, Wise Saying #1

17 Pay attention and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, 18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips. 19 So that your trust may be in the Lord, I teach you today, even you. 20 Have I not written thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge, 21 teaching you to be honest and to speak the truth, so that you bring back truthful reports to those you serve?

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

For the next 30 days, we will be covering 30 "wise sayings" found in Proverbs 22-24... get excited! (If you crack open a hard-copy Bible, you'll see that these sections are genuinely numbered off as Wise Saying Number One, etc)

This first wise saying gives an important (but also somewhat funny) message: "Listen to these 30 sayings!" It is kind of like when a teacher says, "You're gonna want to take notes on this part... it's very important." But in this case, Solomon is saying that everything he's about to say is the important part!

Solomon says we need to pay attention, listen (or read) well, and actually apply what we learn to our hearts! When we pay attention to these wise words and follow through with them in our lives, Solomon says it will change our hearts, our actions, and our words. Over these next 30 days and these next 30 sayings, our prayer for you is that you will learn something new, trust in the Lord more as you read, and see Jesus change your heart through His Word so you can speak truth to the people you serve!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. It has been a while since we've asked this, so let's review... what is wisdom, and where does it come from?

2. Why is it important to not just listen to what we learn in the Bible, but to do it as well?

TRY THIS:

We are going to be following these sayings closely for the next 30 days, so give yourself a challenge to follow for the next 30 days that will actually challenge you! Maybe it could be having no social media for 30 days or reading a chapter of the Bible for 30 days... let us know in the comments what you choose so we can hold you to it!

Comments

  1. I tend to pray when on the move or lying in bed, or just sitting at my desk. For the next 30 days, I want to take on a posture of prayer and will pray at least once a day on my knees.

    1. Really listening to the words of Solomon, paying attention to what he’s telling me, and meditating on them will strengthen me in trusting God for everything!
