Proverbs 10:1-3 — Real Proverb Time

READ THIS: Proverbs 10:1-3

1 The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother. 2 Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value, but righteousness delivers from death. 3 The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Proverbs 10 is a dividing point in Proverbs. Before this chapter, we learn a lot about wisdom and how to choose it, and a lot of it is framed as advice from a father to a son. In Proverbs 10 and beyond, we instead read a bunch of specific proverbs that Solomon was known for saying or had written down himself. Remember, a proverb is a saying that is generally true. Overall, in some broad way, it rings true. Each of the three verses above is a saying that generally rings true. Let's take a look:

1) When kids make good choices, they make their parents happy, but when kids make dumb choices, they stress their parents out.

2) Thing in this world that you get in sketchy ways aren't that valuable for long, but living a life right with God leads to eternal value (since you get to live with Him forever).

3) God always provides for His people, but He makes sure the wicked people don't get what they want.

The first two sayings aren't that controversial. It seems pretty clear upfront. The third say...now some people would have a big issue with that...in this world, don't wicked people get what they want way too often? I think it depends on how you look at it. For me, I think that both the wicked and the righteous have the same craving. To be whole and unbroken. The righteous just recognize that that is only through living with God, while the wicked try to fill their God-shaped void with terrible things that they convince themselves is good (remember what we talked about yesterday?!)

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. What's the point of having a bunch of proverbs/sayings thrown together in a book? Do you think you will like it more or less than what we've been reading so far and the other types of things you've read in the Bible?

2. Do you believe what Solomon writes in verse 3? Do you think what he says is generally true? Why or why not?

TRY THIS:

Try to write your own proverb...something that is generally true! See what it's like! (Bonus points if it's about God and/or righteousness)
